Attention Evangelicals, you’ve been duped - Part 2

To all you social and religious conservatives out there who looked to the Republican Party to write your values and your religious beliefs into law, you were duped. Not only did the Republicans fail to demonize your demons, they were actually harboring them --- get the smelling salts.

Yep, you were duped alright. BIG TIME. And you made it embarrassingly easy for them to pull if off too. All they had to do was pretend to be what you so desperately were seeking and you greedily bought into it. And now you have a bad case of “buyers remorse”. It’s a bitch, isn’t it? Here’s what Cliff Kincaid, one of your conservative watchdogs, has to say about the whole sordid mess:

House leaders permitted homosexuals to infiltrate and manipulate the party apparatus while they publicly postured as friends of family values and traditional marriage. The facade is now in ruins.

And here’s what Eugene Robinson says today in the Washington Post:

The Republicans wouldn't be where they are today -- in control of the White House and all of Capitol Hill -- if they hadn't portrayed themselves as the stalwart defenders of moral standards and painted Democrats as a bunch of anything-goes libertines. Republicans promised social and religious conservatives that the values they treasure would not only be respected but written into law. Even if they didn't deliver on these promises, or even try very hard, Republicans paid enough lip service to moral issues to keep "values voters" inside the tent.

It was a political masterstroke, but it required creating and sustaining an illusion -- that Republican officeholders themselves not only talked the talk but walked the walk, that in their own lives they adhered to these deeply conservative moral standards. Human nature being what it is, there was no way this illusion could be sustained.

Yep you wanted so badly to believe that the Republican Party had the patent on values and shared only your definition of what was evil. But what you failed to realize and Eugene Robinson so aptly points out:

Republican officeholders have paid lip service to [your] crusade, all the while knowing that the human family is diverse and fallible. They know that the gravest threat to marriage is the heterosexual divorce rate. They know that Republicans drink, swear, carouse and have affairs, just like Democrats. They know that homosexuals aren't devils.

Most Americans know all of this, too, by the way. Main Street hasn't been Hicksville for a long time.

But Republicans positioned themselves as [your] national Church Lady and were rewarded with the support of the staunchest religious conservatives, who now feel betrayed.

And though I should find it in my heart to forgive you, I cannot. You lifted this party into power and allowed them to sustain this hoax with your gluttonous, greedy hunger for legislation that would write your misguided values into law and condemn those whom you disdain to a life of second-class citizenship or worse. And while the rest of this country saw right through the GOP hypocrisy, you hung on, blindly believing, and salivating for the tiny crumbs they threw your way. In the end you really got nothing but contempt from everyone, including the party that you chose to put up on the altar and worship. And this Seething Mom thinks you got exactly what you deserve.
