Anne Hathaway's family left the Catholic Church because of its intolerance of homosexuality. Anne grew up wanting to become a nun but shunned Catholicism when she learned her older brother, Michael, was gay.
Hathaway says, "The whole family converted to Episcopalianism after my elder brother came out. Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother?"
And as anyone who has spent even 5 minutes reading this blog knows, I am no fan of the Catholic Church. And as most of you also know, my husband, my three children, my 4 brothers (some for different reasons than mine), my mother and I, all life-long Catholics, have walked away as well (although the last of my 3 children is just finishing up her college education at a Jesuit University). I simply cannot come to grips with the idea that this institution (the Catholic Church) thinks it has enough moral high ground to tell me that my beloved gay son is "intrinsically evil" when it has destroyed so many families over many decades by protecting pedophile priests rather than the innocent victims entrusted to it.
I will go to my grave believing the Catholic Church has committed sins far more evil than the sin they claim my son commits by loving someone of the same sex.
Thank you Anne Hathaway for being so public about this. You and your family make me and my family feel a lot less alone.
